Articles define nouns and are always locarted before the noun that they define. In English, as opososed to Latin languages, the articles are not gendered, nor are these plural forms.

«The» can be proceeded by the preprositions «of» or «to», but in English thre does not exist a contraction of the article with these prepositions, as in some other languages.

USES PF THE DEFINITE ARTICLE
- We use «the » when konw wh or what it is we talking about. We use «the» to indicate something or someone in particular, as such it called the definite article. We speak of something concrete, sometthing that both the speaker and the recceriver konw of because it has been referenced earlier in the conversation or because it is something previosously know to both.

What is the name of the restaurant?
Do you remember the day we went to New York?
Who is the presindent of the United States?
The doctor is very good.
2. We use the definite article with geological regions, mountain chains, seas, oceans, island groups, rivers and countries in plural.
Examples:
the United States, the Netherlands, the Andes, the Canary Island, the Nile River.
3. We use «the to make refrence to directions ( right, left,top, bottom) ot the cardinal points (north, south, east, west).
Examples:
the south of France.

4.- With superlative adjectives and ordinal numbers we also use definite article.

When Not To Use The Definite Article
- We do not use definite article when we are speaking of something in general.
Example:
I like ice cream.
Math is difficult.
2. We never use «the» when we are refererring to television, meals, days of the week, months of the year, season, years, or the hour.
Examples:
I do not like to wtch televition [TV].
I have an appointment on Monday
We eat breakfast at 9:00.
3. With institutions and modes of transportation, when we are speaking in general, we do not use definite article
Example:
We like school.
I go to work by train.
They go to church on Sundays.
4. The is nor used with city names or places in general, athough there are some exceptions as we in the prevous section. IN addition, we do not the definitite article with lakes or streets.
